Vecinos y Vida Sana

(Neighbors and the Healthy Life)

In 2008, St. Joseph Community Health received a planning grant from the Mission and Ministry Fund of Catholic Health Initiatives.  The purpose of the one-year grant is to plan an obesity prevention project in the SE Heights.  Members of the community are being engaged in this planning through a series of neighborhood walks to assess the built environment (sidewalks, parks) and how they can support or encourage healthy activity in the future.  In addition, SJCH will be providing nutrition/cooking classes

through our Community Health Education program to support healthy eating habits.  Both of these activities are supported by our leadership development program (see Leadership Development Program) in order to build the capacity of the participants beyond the training they receive in the classes.  A pre-application for a CHI Mission & Ministry Project Grant (3-year) to support this work has been submitted.
