A Gathering
of Cancer Support
A Gathering of Cancer Support is a multifaceted,
grassroots, nationally recognized, award-winning model program that provides
culturally appropriate prevention education, advocacy and support for Native
Americans who are at risk of or who have been diagnosed with cancer. The program serves people in nine pueblos
and urban areas in New Mexico in addition to serving as a model for similar
start up programs all over the United States.
With respect for cultural traditions and norms, A Gathering
of Cancer Support disseminates prevention education materials and information
for individuals living both in pueblo and urban settings in New Mexico. This prevention education is available in
native languages as well as English and is designed to empower participants to
better understand the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors and
taking advantage of screening opportunities for early detection of cancer
related illnesses.
